Social Security – Disability Benefits
Social Security pays disability benefits to you and certain members of your family if you have worked long enough and have a medical condition that has prevented you from working or is expected to prevent you from working for at least 12 months or end in death.
Disability is something most people don’t like to think about. But the chances that you’ll become disabled probably are greater than you realize.
Studies show that a 20-year-old worker has a 1-in-4 chance of becoming disabled before reaching full retirement age. This booklet provides basic information on Social Security disability benefits and isn’t meant to answer all questions. For specific information about your situation, you should speak with a Social Security representative. Two Programs pay disability benefits: the Social Security disability insurance (SSDI) program and the Supplemental Security Income (SSI) program.
